Announcement of the passing of AMA founder Allen Monsma
It is with great sadness that AMA Horticulture Inc. announces the passing of company founder Allen (Eelke) Monsma at the age of 87. Allen passed away suddenly but peacefully on June 10 in hospital, surrounded by his beloved wife of 65 years, Shirley Monsma, and his daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Rick Bradt and Audrey and Peter DeJong.
Born in Broeksterwoude (Broeksterwâld), the Netherlands, in 1934, Allen was a kind, humble and loyal man who took risks, loved his family deeply, and believed in hard work and the kindness of people.

With his childhood sweetheart and new wife Shirley, Allen arrived in Canada in 1956 with just $ 56 in his pocket. Through determination, prayer and a growing list of contacts in the horticultural industry, Allen founded AMA in 1982. Since then, the company has grown to be a leading horticultural supplier in North America. . Allen’s life and his personal motto, “Go slow, but with all your might,” have been a quiet encouragement to the AMA team for nearly four decades.
“Dad was a pioneer and a leader in the horticulture industry in North America, although he would never say it himself,” said Connie Bradt, AMA Co-CEO with her husband, Rick. “Sometimes it was through great innovations, like inventing Al’s Flower Pouch and Al’s Hopper, bringing the first North American-style rockwool tray to Canada, or being the first in North America to commercially produce Ellepots. But most of the time it was shaped by his countless humble acts of service. Even until last week, he was often the first to produce Ellepots, long before sunrise. It was Dad, who regularly worked behind the scenes and put the needs of others first. His quiet strength has been the model of AMA’s success.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for AMA and our family, and we know that her passing will be felt by many in the horticulture industry,” said Rick Bradt. “We thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. “
A private funeral will be held in Leamington, Ontario at 11 a.m. EST on Thursday, June 17e, and will be available for viewing via the live stream. Find the details as well as Allen Monsma’s obituary here.
