York florist launches two new businesses on lockdown
YOU will have flowers! That’s the message from enterprising York florist Nicola Frear, who launched two new services during the lockdown.
With weddings and events canceled for most of the past 12 months, the floristry industry has taken a huge hit since the Covid outbreak.
But Nicola – who runs Lottie Roberts Flowers – has gone on and launched a subscription as well as postal flowers service, LottiebyLetterbox, which means customers across the UK can take advantage of her special arrangements.
So congratulations to Nicola who is our trader of the week. If you are doing something special with your business, or know a trader who deserves attention, click here to send us an appointment and they could be our next trader of the week. Or you can find the form at www.yorkpress.co.uk/trader/

How long has the company been in existence?
As a professional horticulturalist I have worked for the National Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society and the University of York in a career spanning over 30 years, taking a creative leap of faith in July 2018 and Lottie Roberts Flowers officially launched in August that year. In 2019, I became a member of York Wedding Suppliers, a group of talented local businesses providing wedding planning services in this wonderful city.
I have been delighted to provide flowers for all occasions since the launch of Lottie Roberts Flowers in 2018. I also offer a flower subscription service for all budgets.

Tell us why this company is special?
I have been described as “not a regular florist”! I love using exotic flowers and vibrant colors in my floral arrangements and bouquets and love when customers are happy to let me go when I create their order. That said, I also listen to clients and make private appointments with them to discuss their needs, providing truly personalized service if that is what the client wants. I work from home and with no overhead I can provide an affordable service – for example if a bride just wants a small bouquet for under £ 15 then that’s okay – no job is too small!

How did you adapt during the Covid-19 crisis?
Clearly, 2020 has been a disaster for businesses around the world. Everything stopped overnight – weddings, bridal fairs, photo shoots. During the fall months, I was delighted to have a stall at The Pop Up Pirates which was on Micklegate. It has been invaluable in staying positive – not only has it kept my business running, but I have also made some amazing new friends and have worked with some of these wonderful independent companies ever since. With the start of the third lockdown, I expected January to be gloomy. I was amazed when my phone started ringing – people were sending flowers to loved ones they couldn’t visit. I have always said that delivering flowers is like delivering happiness and it really has been over the past few months. Earlier this year I launched my subscription service and now also offer postal flowers across the UK with my LottiebyLetterbox service, both of which have been popular!

What’s your favorite business story?
I’ve always liked intimate weddings quite a bit, and in 2019 it took me a step further when I was asked to provide flowers for two secret weddings! The first one was so secret I didn’t even know Kelly and Ben were getting married! “We’re going to a wedding,” Kelly said, “please could you do some buttonholes, and I’d like some flowers for my hair, and maybe a little bouquet for my daughter to hold…” No pressure, I thought. I carefully prepared all the flowers and delivered them the same day, and said I hoped everyone was having a fab time at their friend’s wedding. I was amazed later that afternoon when Kelly appeared on social media sporting a new ring and sharing the happiest pic of their special day! One of the best weddings ever!
